Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in history, American studies, humanities, anthropology, archaeology, public history, museum studies, education, or related field or four years of equivalent experience in one of these fields.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a museum, a cultural institution, cultural resource management, or government
  • At least 2 years of full-time experience supervising employees, volunteers, or leading teams or projects.
  • Resume and Cover Letter detailing experience

 

Preferences:

  • 3-5 years of full-time experience in a museum, a cultural institution, cultural resource management, or government
  • Experience working with Native American communities and/or academic study of indigenous cultures.
  • Master's degree in history, American studies, humanities, anthropology, public history, museum studies, education, or related field

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and implement Mission San Luis’ day-to-day museum programs, public workshops, demonstrations, school and group tours, and other associated activities.
  • Supervise up to 13 direct reports including living history interpretation staff and volunteer and internship program as well as assisting in the recruitment, training, and management of dozens of volunteers.
  • Support the development and implementation of on-site programs including but not limited to Homeschool Day, Blessing of Animals, Lecture Series, etc.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and implement community outreach and partnership programs to promote Mission San Luis and meet programmatic goals.
  • Set goals and deadlines for the creation of programs, oversee implementation, and conduct evaluation at the completion.
  • Reports directly to the Executive Director and serves as part of the Mission San Luis leadership team.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of history, archaeology, or ethnohistory obtained through casework or on the job.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning for museum and/or education program development
  • Knowledge or preparing and maintaining budgets.
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate museum educational and outreach programs for local and statewide audiences.
  • Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate educational and programming staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral presentations.
  • Ability to promote museum education programs and events.
  • Ability to understand and apply pertinent rule, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to use computer word processing, research, presentation of plans, reports, presentations, and database management.
