The Work You Will Do:

The DEP Central District Office is seeking a highly qualified candidate with the right energy, attitude, drive, and expertise for a high-level managerial position. This managerial position is based in Orlando and is one of a team of managers who are responsible for overseeing multiple regulatory programs with over 85 staff serving the eight counties in the Central Florida area.  The position oversees staff in the Permitting and Waste Cleanup Program.

This position is located, and requires the ability to work, in and throughout the Central Florida Counties (Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Marion, Volusia, Brevard, Sumter).

Pay:

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing the workload distribution and reviewing/approving staff generated technical documents for multiple regulatory programs within DEP (Air, Waste, Water, SLERC, Waste Cleanup) for applicable state and federal regulations;
  • Ensures goals, objectives, key performance indicators and District metrics are met or exceeded;
  • Works with leadership and other sections on projects; provides technical and managerial expertise to other sections as needed;
  • Responsible for managing employee performance;
    • Monitors staff performance, conducts annual evaluations, provides constructive feedback, supports successes, and takes necessary actions to correct poor performance;
    • Engages and develops technical expertise throughout the team to assist the regulated community;
    • Consistently engages and develops staff for future leadership opportunities;
    • Ensures programmatic awareness and compliance with the District’s and Department’s Safety guidance;
  • Works closely with District leadership to attend (or delegate staff to attend) applicable and/or required trainings, workshops, teleconferences, meetings, and seminars;
  • Identify and complete appropriate training opportunities (both Professional and Personal) for themselves and staff;
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance to the general public, consultants, governmental agencies, and key stakeholders regarding state and federal requirements;
  • Consistently and without fail provides excellent customer service.

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of management principles and techniques;
  • Ability to manage large volumes of workload in a timely manner while maintaining output quality;
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques to address and deal with issues that may arise;
  • Skilled in problem solving, managing conflict and negotiating mutually acceptable outcomes across multiple programs;
  • Ability to coach and mentor staff to develop skills, improve staff performance, and promote career development;
  • Ability to manage a multi-disciplined team;
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to a regulatory program;
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to travel and maintain a valid driver’s license;
  • Skilled in evaluating data and reporting program metrics to assess and meet objectives and goals;
  • Ability to maintain a positive work environment where all staff are engaged and motivated;
  • Builds constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of 4 years
  • Ability to travel
  • The incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, Florida Statutes and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigations, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.
