Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is specialized professional environmental work researching radiation matters, evaluating and licensing uses of radioactive materials, reviewing radioactive materials inspections and initiating corrective actions, and developing proposed rules and guidance documents. Duties include:

 

Performs administrative and technical review of applications and requests for amendments to radioactive materials licenses for protection of the environment and the public. Assists the radioactive materials section administrator in evaluating environmental specialist’s review of applications and requests for amendments to radioactive materials licenses to assure assigned workloads are completed with existing procedures to protect the environment and the public. Interprets Florida Statutes and regulations related to radioactive materials.  Independently issues or denies licenses and amendments. Evaluates sealed radioactive materials sources and device designs and their compatibility with department rules and regulations.

 

Facilitates and coordinates the development of and provides technical and professional guidance, policies, procedures and processes for licensing and inspecting radioactive materials licensees.

 

Performs IT functions for the Radioactive Materials Section including updating and maintaining of databases, templates, and macros.

 

Performs complex radioactive materials license decommissioning assignments.

 

Assists section management in the development and management of the reciprocity program.

 

Other related duties.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles, chart of the nuclides, techniques of ionizing radiation physics, ionizing radiation detection instrumentations and hazard regulations; mathematical principals involving determining radioactive decay, ionizing radiation dose, and dose rates; naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) issues to include NORM generated in the phosphate, oil & gas industries and mineral sands mining in Florida; decontamination and decommissioning processes are techniques for facilities and property contaminated with radioactive materials; radioactive materials licensing and inspection processes to include licensing, inspection and office procedures; bureau’s organizational structure between field offices, programs and headquarters. Ability to: understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to ionizing radiation detection, measurement, evaluations, and control; collect, record, evaluate, and analyze technical data using scientific methods and techniques, mathematically determine radioactive decay, ionizing radiation dose and dose rates using a scientific calculator; travel via airplane; lift 60 pounds; respond to radiological emergencies. Skill in: mathematically determine radioactive decay, ionizing dose and dose rates; and perform radiological surveys to detect ionizing radiation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in the area of chemistry, physics, health physicist (radiation related) or nuclear medicine technology (or similar work experience).
