Duties and Responsibilities

This is a professional  health educator position working as a Certified Lactation Counselor in the Broward County Health Department WIC (Women Infant & Children) program. This position provides breastfeeding support, education and counseling to breastfeeding clients.    

 

This position is designated as a sensitive position and is required to maintain information inaccordance with state and federal statutes, rules, and regulations, as well as of Broward County Health Department Policies, Protocols, and Procedures. This position has been delegated custodial authority for their Program/Unit's information set(s) and/or secured areas(s).

 

  • Provides education, support and counseling to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding clients by telephone and in the WIC clinic and in the hospital setting.
  • Provides breastfeeding education, support and counseling in the hospital setting.  Works in conjunction with the hospital healthcare team to provide optimal breastfeeding support. 
  • Assesses monitors and evaluates physical conditions that predispose mothers and babies to a complex breastfeeding experience.
  • Develops care plans specific to the needs identified through assessment and counseling.
  • Documents in the WIC Data system (FL-Wise)
  • Teaches breastfeeding classes
  • Refers to Senior Health Educator Consultant/IBCLC when client issue is beyond scope of practice.

 

This position is available outside the WIC clinic and the usual 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. working schedule to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems.

 

This position will receive a cell phone for breastfeeding counseling and support outside of the WIC clinic normal hours of operation 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and weekends.

All Phone calls made or taken from clients should be documented on the telephone log and entered into FL-WISE the next business day.

 

Attends staff meetings, trainings and staff development activities as required.  Completes leave, attendance, EARS (Employee Activity Record System), travel and any other reports as required and according to established procedures.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFITIONS :

  1. Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  2. Current employee of Florida Department of Health including includes OPS, Career Service, SES or SMS employees.
  3. Must be a Certified Lactation Counselor.
  4. Must be able to work outside of the usual 8:00 to 5:00 working schedule and weekends.
  5. Experience assessing, monitoring, and evaluating breastfeeding clients.
  6. Experience documenting breastfeeding counseling in FL WISE.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION :

  1. Minimum 3 years working with WIC clients providing BF education.
