The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, childcare providers, human trafficking and public assistance. The agency’s mission is to work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VACANCY.

 

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Human Services Worker II at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • The incumbent in this position is responsible for assisting Administrative Services by supporting the mission, vision and values of Northeast Florida State Hospital and delivering core support services to our customers. This position is assigned to the Transportation Department to provide assistance in the daily operation of the facility.
  • Medical Appointments: 
    • Transports individuals off grounds to community physicians and other medical facilities in an effort to reduce controllable expenses. 
    • Assists in keeping the people we serve calm when transporting to and from appointments in the community. 
    • Picks up the people we serve meals if their appointment is during meal time. 
    • Documents behavior of the individual while off grounds, if necessary.
  • As a continuation of ensuring a safe and secure environment, transport s individuals to ACLF or mental health facility when discharged back to the community. 
  • Picks up the individual from the living area. 
  • Checks for all luggage, paperwork, and medication as needed. 
  • Upon arrival assist staff with unloading and check in process. 
  • Before leaving facility obtain signatures on all paperwork, including Transportation Discharge Checklist. 
  • Returns forms to the appropriate office.
  • To ensure a safe and secure environment the employee will operate all vehicles within the posted speed limits on NEFSH campus and the community highways. 
  • Will follow assigned schedule in an efficient manner so appointments are timely met.
  • As part of our efforts to increase customer satisfaction, transports the people we serve to their work areas and Recovery Centers as scheduled in a timely manner.
  • Keeps a maintenance check on vehicles to reduce cost of controllable expenses. 
  • Keeps the vehicles clean and fueled. 
  • Notifies supervisor and the hospital mechanic of any problems with the vehicle. 
  • Maintains a neat, accurate and legible Vehicle Usage Record on the vehicles.
  • Delivers legal documents to community lawyer or courthouse. 
  • Delivers blood to community labs. 
  • Pickup x-rays or reports from community hospitals or Physician’s office.
  • Performs related duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the methods of instructing and providing care to others.
  • Ability to understand and apply the methods and practices used in medical, psychiatric, nursing or child care or in working with developmentally disabled persons.
  • Ability to take and monitor vital signs.
  • Ability to administer routine treatments under medical supervision.
  • Ability to read.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to carry out instructions for implementing prescribed treatment plans including behavior modification activities.
  • Ability to instruct others in basic self-care skills.
  • Ability to instruct others in recreational activities.
  • Ability to provide instruction and personal guidance and care to clients.
  • Ability to prepare charts and records.
  • Ability to prepare instructional materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience working in a medical, psychiatric, nursing or child care setting, or in working with developmentally disabled persons.
  • College or vocational/technical training from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience.
  • Class B Commercial Driver License with Passenger Endorsement.
