Description of duties:
An exciting opportunity exists for an OPS Fish and Wildlife Technician to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section in managing the Babcock Webb WMA in Charlotte County. FWC’s Southwest Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities.
The incumbent will assist with prescribed burning operations on the Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area and the Yucca Pens Unit. Assists in property and facility maintenance. Operates ATVs, UTVs and 4x4 trucks with trailers. Assists biologists with wildlife management activities for game and non-game species to include surveys, check station management, and accurate technical biological data collection. Interacts professionally with the public and partners providing accurate information concerning wildlife, area conditions, rules, and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Incumbent should (is preferred but not required) have prior prescribed fire operations experience and be able to work well with team members and members of the public.
Other required knowledge, skills and abilities include knowledge of the following:
- Have S130/S190 fire training certifications or obtain within 3 months of hiring.
- The ability to operate outdoors under adverse and inclement weather conditions that include high temperatures and humidity wearing full personal protective equipment required for prescribed burning operations for more than 10 hours in one day.
- The ability to pass a rigorous Physical Assessment Test (PAT) required to become a member of the prescribed fire team.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to trailer and operate 4WD vehicles is required.
- Applicant must be self-sufficient and capable of troubleshooting maintenance issues that come up in the field.
- The ability to work productively alone with remote supervision or as member of a team, and the flexibility to occasionally work long hours and variable schedules, such as nights, weekends, or holidays.
Additional requirements: Employee allowed to work a maximum of 1,920 hours per year.
