Trails and Access Specialist II:
$4,495 per month (SR-18, Step D)

Trails and Access Specialist III:
$4,858 to $5,918 per month (SR-20, Step D to I)

Trails and Access Specialist IV:
$5,258 to $6,399 per month (SR-22, Step D to I).

Note: For vacancies at Step D to I, hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

The objectives of the State's Trails and Access Program are to provide for a broad range of recreational, cultural, religious and subsistence opportunities for all people of the State; and to help conserve the State's cultural heritage and environment through the use of sound land conservation principles.

Trails & Access Specialist II are advanced trainees in which assignments characteristically involve assisting in professional trails and access projects for which a higher level trails and access specialist has overall responsibility.  More complex assignments may be selected to progressively develop the incumbent of the position for work at the next higher level; and performs other related duties as assigned. 

Trails & Access Specialist III are the first independent level in the professional trails and access development program. Positions are assigned trails and access projects of average difficulty and complexity.  Problems encountered can usually be resolved by direct application of standard guides and procedures; and performs other related duties as assigned. 

Trails & Access Specialist IV independently performs the full range of work in the development and implementation of a statewide trails and access network and management system; assignments may range from routine trails and access maintenance to development of a newly acquired trail system with significant archeological issues and concerns from special interest groups with opposing views and negotiations with private landowners; and performs other related duties as assigned.To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization to Work:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States. 


Education: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree.  Course work must include a minimum of 24 semester credit hours in at least three of the following areas: 

(1) natural resources management; e.g., natural or wild land resource conservation, natural area management or conservation, watershed management, wildlife management or conservation, forest management or conservation;
(2) natural resources based outdoor recreation; e.g., principles of outdoor recreation, natural resource interpretation methods, outdoor recreation facilities management, wilderness management, parks administration, wild land fire management, and weed management;
(3) natural resources planning; e.g., environmental/land use/resource/wild land planning, cartography, remote sensing, aerial photographic interpretation, forest land measurements, forest and wildlife resource inventories, watershed analysis and planning, ecosystem analysis;
(4)  related studies; e.g., forestry, wildlife biology, plant ecology, forest or wildlife ecology, plant evolution and taxonomy, botany, and zoology.

Specialized Experience:
Trails & Access Specialist II: NO experience Required.
Trails & Access Specialist III: One (1) year
Trails & Access Specialist IV: Two (2) years of:
progressively responsible professional experience in outdoor recreation management, natural resources management or other related fields which demonstrated the ability to develop and maintain a trails and access road system within a resource recreational program.

Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.

Driver's License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.  The immediate vacancy has this requirement.

Lifting and Carrying:  Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects of various weights unassisted and/or assisted by another person and/or use of equipment (e.g., hoisting equipment, hand truck), with or without reasonable accommodation.  The immediate vacancy has this requirement.

Other Requirements:
Firearms: Some positions may require applicants to be authorized to carry, use and possess firearms and ammunition when participating in predator control and animal control duties. For these positions, applicants must meet current Federal and State law requirements applicable to the carrying, use and possession of firearms. Under the requirements of the Federal Gun Control Act, applicants for these positions may not possess a conviction of domestic violence.
