WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST III - TEMPORARY - MAKIKI, OAHU

The position is located in Makiki, Oahu.

Salary: $4,858.00 to $5,918.00 per month (SR-20, Step D to I)

Wildlife Biologist III: Independently performs a limited range of professional wildlife research, development, or management assignments; plans census and surveys of game species; collects, compiles and analyzes hunter use and kill data; independently conducts smaller wildlife research, development and management projects; may direct the work of lower-level professional and non-professional wildlife workers; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Who we are: The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife manages state Forest Reserves, Natural Area Reserves, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Game Management Areas, and Public Hunting Areas. Program areas include forestry, wildlife, trails and access, and natural area reserves. The State's wildlife program is concerned with the conservation, development, and management of the wildlife resources of the State on a sound basis so that maximum sustained benefits will accrue to the people of the State. The broad objectives and functions of the program are to obtain information through research, surveys, and inventories on the life history, ecology, and the range and habitat requirements of the species in Hawaii to regulate the hunting and other environmental factors affecting the various game and non-game species to maintain the maximum or optimum populations compatible with the carrying capacity of the ranges. This includes the evaluation of habitats and the wildlife resources thereon or potentially supportable, discovery and interpretation of principles and facts upon which the management of the wildlife resources rests, and the development of new improved methods, practices, techniques, and instruments necessary to perform such work.

This position is a Wildlife Biologist in the Oahu branch staff with the primary responsibility for planning, development, restoration, and maintenance of the Wildlife Restoration and Management Section’s Forest Bird Recovery Project. The main goal of the project is to recover the Oahu Elepaio populations and restore their habitat. The position may assist in projects focused on management activities in Oahu’s Public Hunting Areas, Game Management Areas, and Wildlife Sanctuaries; be involved in the implementation of other forest and wildlife projects, the development of new projects, and coordination with other Branch and Division staff and cooperating agencies; provide technical expertise on wildlife matters, field direction for specific game species management, wildlife projects as assigned, administrative support for all work performed; and perform other duties as assigned.

As a Division of Forestry and Wildlife team member, you’ll focus on forest bird recovery projects in Oahu’s Forest Reserves. This project prioritizes the recovery of Oahu Elepaio populations by controlling predators, monitoring nesting activity and fledgling success, coordinating activities with other Elepaio restoration projects, and providing technical assistance on projects that may affect forest bird populations.

Basic Education Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, or in a related biological science, with a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester credit hours in the following areas:

Excess work experience as described under Experience Requirements below, or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience that provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.

The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systematically.

Specialized Experience Requirement: One (1) year of progressively responsible professional experience in wildlife conservation, development and management, and/or wildlife research.

Firearms: This position requires the handling of firearms and ammunition when participating in predator control and eradication activities. Applicants must meet all Federal and State regulations pertaining to the carrying, use and possession of firearms and ammunition. Under the requirements of the Federal Gun Control Act, applicants for these positions may not possess a conviction of domestic violence.

License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
