The Buyer Trainee position is used for recruitment and training purposes for the Buyer; full-working level of this position. Through various types of on-the-job training, the employee will learn to carry out the duties of a Buyer. Typically, the full-working level requires six months of experience as a Trainee or equivalent work experience. Trainees are expected to apply his/her technical knowledge and training while learning the state laws and department policies and procedures necessary to achieve the expertise and independence of the journeyman level - Buyer.
This position will service as a key customer-service area. Experience in auto or parts purchasing is a plus, but not required. This position will assist the mechanic’s shop with procurement needs.
Schedule: Monday-Thursday 6 am to 4:30 pm.

Purchasing
- Selects supply sources and makes purchases within purchasing authority
- Locates and picks up supplies from local vendors
- Issues supplies and fills requisitions
- Prepares and processes specifications, purchase orders, and requisitions
- Determines product, equipment, and service requirements and methods of acquisition.
- Makes arrangements for incoming shipments and coordinates with holding agencies and transportation vendors by obtaining freight rates, time-frames, and availability of transportation
- Maintains inventory records by adding or deleting items as they are issued or received
- Verifies, updates, and reconciles inventory information using a computerized records system
- Performs physical inventory of warehouse and supply yard and reconciles records
- Determines proper floor and shelf location for supplies
- Ensures hazardous materials are stored safely
- Receives and unloads freight, verifies quantity and quality of order
- Tags supplies and stocks shelves
- Delivers supplies to work areas
- May deliver and move furniture and equipment
- Maintains the front counter of supply warehouse
- Answers phone, greets and provides information to visitors
- Advises users about product and service availability, specification preparation, and on legal requirements, policies, and procedures for procurement
- Other duties as assigned or needed to ensure department goals are met
- Some knowledge of purchasing procedures.
- Operating a personal computer; interpreting and applying laws, rules and regulations; preparing detailed written material; collecting and recording information.
- Fork-lift experience. This position will require the candidate to operate a forklift almost daily.
