Summary
The Education Specialist is responsible for the development and successful implementation of educational programs at the Idaho State Museum (ISM). The primary focus of the Education Specialist is PreK-12th grade audiences, including students, educators, and families. ISM Pre-K-12th grade offerings include the Field Trip and Traveling Trunks Programs, Homeschool Days, Family Second Saturdays, and seasonal educational camps throughout the year.
**The typical schedule for this position is Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday between 8am-5pm (40 hours per week) depending on the needs of the Education program and will work frequent pre-scheduled evenings and/or Saturdays as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
School-Age (Pre-K-12) Educator and Learner Programs
- Create a variety of educational materials and programs for PreK-12th grade audiences and educators based on state standards and museum best practice
- Manage the organization and logistics of the ISM Field Trip Program, including scheduling, communication, and organizing payment from clients
- Working with the Curator of Education, develop field trip content and materials that draw connections between ISM exhibitions, permanent collections, and are aligned with current state standards
- Facilitate group greetings, guided tours, and hands-on activities for visitors to the Museum
- Working with the Curator of Education, develop state-standards aligned traveling trunks and update current curriculum/lesson plans for Traveling Trunk program, as needed
- Manage the Traveling Trunk program including scheduling, communication, payment, logistics, and maintenance of existing trunks
- Coordinate Homeschool Days including activity development, group scheduling and communication with registrants
- Alongside Museum Educators, organize and facilitate monthly Homeschool Day activities
- Plan and facilitate the GEM High School Internship Program including recruitment and selection of students for each cohort, training, and logistics
- Collaborate with internal departments to schedule speakers and activities for the evening sessions of GEM
- Assist the Curator of Education in the creation, development, organization and facilitation of monthly Family Second Saturdays, including working this pre-scheduled Saturday each month
- Assist the Curator of Education in the creation, development, organization and facilitation of seasonal camps for school-age audiences
- Support the creation and facilitation of teacher professional development program offerings.
General
- Participate and assist in organizing education-focused meetings with internal and external stakeholders and participants
- Draft marketing copy for assigned educational programs
- Occasionally assist with ISM and ISHS outreach and educational programs
- Purchase and maintain program materials and supplies
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
- Researching, planning, developing, writing, and evaluating educational programs for specific audiences and modalities-Typically gained by a bachelor’s degree (or higher) with a major in Education, History or closely related field OR by 3 years where this was a prominent and frequent job requirement.
- Using a personal computer for word processing, spread sheets and desktop publishing- Typically gained by formal training in each of the three software packages and at least three months of applied experience OR if you have at least 6 months of experience using this software.
- Preparing and delivering educational talks to groups- Typically gained by at least one year experience where this activity was a regular, frequent and required job responsibility.

- Supervisory Practices-Typically gained by a class or seminar (more than one day), specifically covering supervisory practices OR leadwork experience that required work direction, monitoring work, and making work assignments (such experience on a fill-in basis is not qualifying unless for a period of approximately three months or more).
Good Knowledge
- Idaho and American History- Typically met by college level coursework in Idaho history and American history OR work experience in a setting where Idaho and American history was the focus.
- K-12 school curricula- Typically gained through upper division coursework in K-12 curricula development methods OR by at least one year of experience developing varied curricula for at least one grade level within K-12 in a museum, historic site, or related setting
Experience
- Researching, developing, and conducting curriculum for interpretive programs, environmental education programs or outdoor education programs- Typically gained by at least 6 months' work experience where this was a prominent and frequent job requirement.
- Developing, applying and explaining policy and procedures-Typically gained by at least 6 months' work experience developing, applying, and explaining policy and procedures to others in a business setting.
- Event Planning- Typically gained by at least 6 months' work experience planning, scheduling, and coordinating specialized events including field trips, meetings and conferences, educational workshops, camps, and other public programs.
