Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a Mechanic to join our District 6 team in Eastern Idaho. This position is located in Salmon but will report to Gibsonville until the Salmon Shop remodel is complete. This exciting position could be a perfect career opportunity for you to put your mechanical knowledge to work for the citizens of Idaho at the Idaho Transportation Department. The incumbent will be responsible for repairing and maintaining heavy-duty road maintenance and construction equipment and light-duty vehicles in accordance with federal and state motor vehicle regulations. The ideal candidate will be an experienced mechanic with knowledge of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair techniques for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Idaho Transportation Department's (ITD) vision is to become the best transportation department in the country by empowering and training our employees for their career advancement. ITD has created an opportunity for employees hired into the Mechanic classification to advance to the Equipment Technician, Transportation classification upon completion of a customized training plan. We anticipate that Mechanics new to ITD will be able to complete this training plan within 2 years.

  • This position requires that you obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 60 days of hire as well as pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. ITD will provide training to meet the Entry Level Driver Training requirements as well as licensing costs.

Examples Of Duties

  • Diagnose and repair a variety of equipment and vehicles used within the District including repair and maintaining power plants, power-trains, and all related accessory systems involved with the unit. This equipment will consist of: Highway maintenance equipment including Motorgraders, Sweepers, Excavators, Dozers, Frontend loaders, Equipment Trailers, Sanders, 10-wheel trucks, 6-wheel trucks, and a variety of light-duty equipment
  • Diagnose, repair and maintain a variety of electrical and electronic systems used on various equipment and vehicles including computer control components, high voltage AC currents, and other electronic systems. The vehicles will consist mainly of 10-wheel and 6-wheel trucks
  • Diagnose, repair and maintain all types of heating and air conditioning systems used within vehicles and equipment
  • Manufacture and weld various equipment parts and components including, but not limited to, mechanical components for equipment (snow plow harnesses, sander parts, etc.) and other specialized parts not readily available for purchase
  • Mount and balance tires on vehicles and equipment including fixing tires and performing other minor repair on vehicles as a normal part of vehicle/equipment maintenance
  • Repair steering and suspension systems on all District vehicles. Steering and suspension systems will consist mainly of types used on heavy-duty trucks
  • Maintain records of repairs, parts orders, and related information and documentation using word processing and spreadsheet computer programs.
  • Diagnose, repair and fabricate various hydraulic systems such as those attachments used on district equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge of:

  • Safety precautions and procedures relating to mechanical equipment and repair shops;
  • The use, care, and disposal of hazardous automotive material and waste.

Experience

  • Diagnosing and repairing gasoline and/or diesel automotive and construction-type equipment;
  • Using mechanics' tools and related specialized equipment to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul of engines and related drive train, electrical, and hydraulic systems;
  • Preparing records and reports;
  • Diagnosing and repairing electronic and computer-controlled motor vehicle systems;
  • Reading and interpreting technical service manuals.

An essential function of this position is driving an ITD vehicle. Incumbents are required to successfully pass a driving record check to be considered for this position.

Disqualifiers

Within the last three (3) years:

  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident
  • Four (4) moving violations
  • Failure to submit to a chemical test

Within The Last Two (2) Years

  • Three (3) moving violations

Within The Last Twelve (12) Months

  • Accumulation of six (6) points
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Two (2) moving violations

At ITD, the safety of our employees and the public is our highest priority. As part of our commitment, we adhere to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements by reviewing the FMCSA Clearinghouse record for all employees with CDL’s, both before employment and annually. If you are selected for this position, you will be required to register and authorize ITD to review your FMCSA Clearinghouse record as well asundergo a controlled substance test including:

  • Random
  • Reasonable suspicion
  • Post-accident
  • Follow-up
  • Return to duty
