We are seeking two full time and three temporaryPsychiatric TechnicianatSHW located inNampa.This position offers the opportunity to work with an excellent team of the top health care providers in Idaho. Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is seeking individuals who are driven to make an impact to our patients’ lives. If you are someone who wants to make a difference, share in growth and development, and know at the end of the day you have made a positive impact, then our Psychiatric Technician position might be for you!This position also requires applicants to become certified in CPR and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, and day shifts, swing shifts, and night shifts.

SHW is a 16-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Treatment Hospital (for adolescents between 11 and 18 years old) nestled between Ridgecrest and Centennial golf courses on a picturesque piece of state property along the Nampa Interstate 84 corridor. SHW provides psychiatric inpatient treatment care for Idaho’s adolescent citizens with the most serious and persistent mental illnesses. The hospital works in partnership with families and communities to enable clients to return to community living and is accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

This position is not eligible for telework.

The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. Any applicant offered employment in this position, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. In addition, the applicant will be required to complete and pass a criminal history background investigation after a conditional offer of employment.

This announcement may be used to fill full-time, part-time, and temporary positions. Temporary positions are limited to working 1,385 hours in a 12-month period for any one state agency. Employees are eligible for benefits if they work twenty (20) hours or more per week and the term of employment is expected to exceed five (5) continuous months.

This is an ongoing announcement which means at the time applicants apply, we may or may not have an opening. Those applicants that take and pass the exam to show they meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the referral list. When a position becomes available, the hiring supervisor will then directly contact those applicants they wish to interview off the referral list.

Example Of Duties

  • Provide a therapeutic environment.
  • Facilitate on-going treatment for persons with mental illness in an inpatient setting.
  • Implement treatment plans and monitor outcome of goals.
  • Conduct therapeutic activities and co-facilitate group therapy sessions with patients who require intense inpatient psychiatric care. This may involve skills training, psychosocial rehabilitation activities, behavior management, symptom management, and anger management.
  • Interact with patients on a one-to-one basis and in group settings to encourage appropriate behavior and provide input into developing and changing patient treatment plans.
  • Observe the signs of mental and physical illness, the patient's response to treatment, personal hygiene activities, and the individual's behavior and interaction with others.
  • Take and record patients' vital signs and follow nursing procedures for patient care.
  • Foster increased patient self-esteem through teaching and role modeling, facilitate problem solving, record observations of individual and group behavior, and chart treatment progress.

Minimum Qualifications

You must possess all the minimum and specialty minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. Please make sure your resume or work history supports your meeting the minimum and specialty qualifications for this position. Failure to do this may disqualify you from being considered for this position.It is highly recommended to attach a one-page cover letter to your application to demonstrate how you meet the requirements below.

  • Some knowledge of human services to include psychology, nursing, or social work.Typically requires a completed college course in psychology, nursing or social work OR at least six months experience in dual diagnosis, behavioral interventions, mental health disorders and medications, psychiatric symptoms or therapeutic communications OR completed Psychiatric Technician training program through Southwest Idaho Treatment Center, State Hospital North, State Hospital West or State Hospital South OR at least six months of work experience providing treatment services for the mentally ill.
  • Experience with behavior management for individuals diagnosed with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Typically gained by completion of at least six credits of upper-division college coursework in psychology or special education OR at least six months of work experience completing behavioral assessments and/or mental health scales, analyzing behavior and its function, and developing or assisting in developing behavior support plans. Experience may have been gained through SHS, SHW, SWITC, or SHN's sponsored training.
