Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrician to work at Big Muddy River Correctional Center. The ideal candidate will perform electrical work at a journeyman level.   This position maintains all electrical systems within the facility and performs routine maintenance inspections in accordance with the facility work order system.   Repairs and maintains electric switchboard panels, electrical components of air conditioners, installs and maintains electrical systems which operate on alternating or direct current circuits and high voltage lines.  This position also repairs and maintains all electrical locking systems and security lights throughout the facility.  We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Performs routine maintenance inspections in accordance with facility work order system and master craft / routine / cycle lists which includes the inspection of electrical equipment in all buildings all exhaust fans electrical and signal manholes transformers power light and emergency circuit breaker panels switches meters and circuit breakers.
  • Repairs and maintains electric switchboards panels electrical components of air conditioners and other apparatus utilizing electricity or Its effects i.e. fire alarm systems buffers intercoms locking control systems security camera systems computer local are network using fiber optic cabling cable TV system.
  • Installs and maintains electrical systems which operate on alternating or direct current circuits and high voltage lines generators and appliances through panels switches meters and circuit breakers maintains an effective preventive maintenance program which will eliminate major electrical failures.
  • Seats and replaces brushes rewinds and replaces coils and armatures performs similar work in repairing and replacing parts converts motors refrigerators and similar appliances to correct current rating maintains a daily count of tools assigned provides daily written tool report.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program and four (4) years full-time journey level electrician experience; OR eight (8) years of full-time journey level electrician experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience applying established national, state, and / or local electrical codes.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, simple sketches, and / or drawings.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience estimating time, labor and materials necessary to complete work orders.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience using tools of the trade including, but not limited to, voltmeters, amp meters, ohm meters, and other calibration and testing equipment apparatus.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience maintaining inventory and / or accurate tool count.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience inspecting unsafe or faulty conditions in productions, transmission, and utilization of electricity.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting building automation systems.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience working with journey level telecommunications work such as data networks, cable TV, and / or security cameras.
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC / IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
