Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a detailed oriented person to serve as an Accountant in the Fixed Assets / Property Control Unit. The selected person will perform a variety of professional accounting duties in the maintenance of property control records and financial reporting procedures. This position will also establish and maintain inventory accounts, reconcile reports, and maintain appropriate property control and fixed assets systems. Essential Functions

  • Maintains property control forms and records related to financial reporting.
  • Reconciles Statewide Accounting System reports on a regular basis.
  • Maintains Property Control and Fixed Assets system records utilized by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).
  • Assists in conducting an annual agency wide physical inventory at the IDOC facilities.
  • Responds to audit request inquiries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
  • Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional accounting and / or auditing experience.
  • Prefers a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics or Finance.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience applying accounting principles to the reconciliation of various reports.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and / or similar type of computer programs.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience using a Statewide Accounting System.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working with inventory reports.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on a physical annual certification of inventory.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience tracking assets for a medium to large size organization.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience with updating inventory records.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience with auditing inventory reports.
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC / IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.  The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
