Position Overview

Illinois River Correctional Center is seeking an energetic and organized candidate to fill the vacancy of Corrections Maintenance Craftsman. As the craftsman, you will maintain integrity and professionalism while carrying out your daily tasks. In this role, you will be a part of a team that assists individuals in custody in the many duties of maintaining the facility’s grounds in tasks such as lawn care and snow removal. You will be a mentor to the individuals in custody as you teach trade techniques and how to follow instructions for reporting. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.


Essential Functions

  • Performs preventative maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance and repair of equipment, including carpentry, masonry, painting, and plumbing tasks at journeyman level.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repair which includes the following: inspection and maintenance of lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, doors and windows, sallyport sliding gates and chairs, desks, and related equipment.
  • Maintains a daily count of all tools used during each day.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman in one of the maintenance or automotive repair trades.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with maintenance and automotive repair trades.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with regulating a fleet of vehicles.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working in building trades and/or assisting tradesman in a workplace environment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience maintaining inventory and accountability of tools.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience performing maintenance work at a journeyman level.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in using and maintaining snow removal equipment and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience guiding a group of individuals completing daily tasks in a workplace environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
