Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Corrections Vocational Instructor for Building Maintenance to work at Menard Correctional Center. This position is responsible for coordinating and providing vocational instruction to students, developing programs and student evaluative measures and provide professional guidance. Essential Functions
- Coordinates and provides vocational instruction to students on Department of Labor curriculum for apprenticeships such as building maintenance, organizational logistics, office management, aquaponic/hydroponic gardening system operations, and various types of service industries.
- Develops program and student evaluative measures and reports.
- Maintains cost records.
- Provides professional guidance and counseling to assist students in making personal adjustments.
- Certifies all Department of Corrections and Institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in Building Maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in a production or warehouse setting.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience of the practices, methods, tools, and materials of a trade commonly taught in vocational education.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience utilizing tools, materials, and equipment in an industrial trade.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in inventory control.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience instructing curriculum-based programming.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience maintaining discipline, safety, and an effective learning environment.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience completing daily logs for accountability of tools.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience inspecting finished products.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience conducting proper preventative maintenance on equipment used in an industrial shop.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in a correctional and/or similar type of facility.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of an approved course in correctional officer training within six (6) months of employment.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
