Job Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Land (BOL), Permit Section, Groundwater Unit is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Geologist I. This position performs a variety of supervised functions that provide an introduction to, and training in geologic and hydrogeologic analysis pertaining to groundwater systems. The ideal candidate will assist higher-level geologists in reviewing and regulating activities associated with groundwater in accordance with regulations including, but not limited to, 35 Illinois Administrative Code, Subtitle F, Part 620 and 35 Illinois Administrative Code, Subtitle G rules.

Essential Functions

  • Observes and participates in training to develop expertise in geologic and hydrogeologic analysis pertaining to
    permit review of Groundwater Systems at Hazardous/Non-Hazardous Waste facilities for the Bureau of Land (BOL),
    Permit Section, Groundwater Unit A, in accordance with regulations pertaining to Groundwater including but not
    limited to, 35 IAC Subtitle G rules and 35 IAC Part 620;
  • Assists with the development of technical reports, in accordance with regulations pertaining to Groundwater
    including but not limited to, 35 IAC Subtitle G rules and 35 IAC Part 620; incorporating geologic and hydrogeologic
    data, under the guidance of a higher level geologist(s).
  • Receives training, attends, observes, participates in meetings, training, and continuing education;
  • Observes higher level staff and participates in the interpretation and evaluation of the groundwater permit
    application processes;
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated
    above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in geology, including at least 12 – 16 semester credit hours in groundwater geology,

hydrology, hydrogeology, soil physics, and/or soil chemistry.

  • Requires no previous experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers elementary knowledge of natural geologic processes (methods), procedures, and techniques.
  • Prefers ability to prepare comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Prefers ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Prefers ability to profit from training received in the area of geologic investigations.
  • Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access software.

  • Requires ability to pass a name based background check.
  • As required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120, this position will be required to take (within 90 days of employment) and maintain

working knowledge of (8 hr. annual refresher) and/or certification to ensure position is up to date with laws, rules, and
regulations to maintain compliance with IL Department of Labor Occupational Safety Regulations:24 hour OSHA Training.
