Position Overview

This position is accountable for performing inspection, sampling, testing, and reporting for various construction materials originating in the district.

Essential Functions

  • Performs adequate inspection, including sampling and testing of material produced in the district.
  • Prepares all required documents and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintains a working relationship with producers’ and suppliers’ personnel.
  • Responsible for proper use of field and laboratory test equipment.
  • Serves in capacities as directed by the Materials Engineer.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum OR two years of engineering experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass QC/QA classes as needed.
  • Extensive districtwide travel and occasional statewide travel.
  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, production facilities, active construction sites and roads open to traffic.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol testing.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.

  • As an Engineering Technician I, you have the possibility of promoting to an Engineering Technician II within 12-24 months.
  • A possibility of promoting to an Engineering Technician III within 18-30 months.


Engineer Technician I’s with the Illinois Department of Transportation are trained in a variety of specializations during their career. They work with engineers from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and careers. They are exposed to both external and internal engineering professionals.
