Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire Site Technician II's at Illinois Beach State Park for The Office of Land Management. This position will perform routine grounds maintenance and janitorial duties, including plowing snow, plumbing repairs, HVAC maintain, use and maintenance of a variety of power tools, planting, pruning and maintenance of trees/shrubs including removal. The Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6.5 miles along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan in northern Illinois - offering a full range of recreation opportunities at one of the most unique and beautiful natural settings in America. Illinois Beach is the only remaining beach ridge shoreline left in the state, with dunes and swales, sprawling marshes, forests of oak and vast arrays of animal life and vegetation. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance activities in the operation and maintenance programs at Illinois Beach State Park.
  • Maintains facility including minor electrical diagnosis and repairs.
  • Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with and complete various natural resource projects and prescribed burns.
  • Assist outdoor recreation/education programs as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • Two (2) years of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and Regulations.

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide/herbicide operator’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Office of Land Management

The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels of land and institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation, and preservation. The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Work Hours: 2 Schedules:

  • Schedule 1: Friday - Tuesday, 7am - 3pm with a 30 min. lunch
  • Schedule 2: Wed - Sun, 3pm - 11pm with a 30 min. lunch (April - Sept) & 12pm - 8pm (Oct. - March)
