The Department of Veterans Affairs is looking for an Administrative Assistant 1 to work at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery (IVC) in Van Meter, conveniently located along Interstate 80, west of Des Moines.
This person will serve as the first point of contact for veterans, their families and funeral directors.
Duties Include But Not Limited To
Monthly optional Medical Insurance Premium (Iowa Choice*) for 2025:
Single: $64/mo = employee share; $836/mo = state share
Family: $210/mo = employee share; $1,896/mo = state share

The Department of Veterans Affairs is looking for an Administrative Assistant 1 to work at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery (IVC) in Van Meter, conveniently located along Interstate 80, west of Des Moines.
This person will serve as the first point of contact for veterans, their families and funeral directors.
Duties Include But Not Limited To
- Receive requests and prepare responses for information related to internment eligibility, benefits, committal services and internment options.
- Research applicable regulations and laws as well as discharge and marriage certificates to determine eligibility.
- Enter information in database, send confirmation and make calendar entry for IVC calendar system.
- Contact military branches for funeral honors.
- Prepare family packet and temporary marker.
- Facilitate committal service by coordinating with funeral director, military honor guard, VSO and family members to ensure professional escort and conduct of the service.
- Assist with accounting for revenue and expense receipts
- Assist with ordering needed supplies.
- Information Technology and Office Automation experience is a plus.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in any field.
- A total of four years of education (as described in number one) and/or full-time experience in accounting, secretarial, or office support work collecting, compiling, reporting, examining and/or editing numerical data; coding and qualifying people for benefits, licenses, or other transactions; preparing and keeping budgetary accounts and projections; organizing and implementing office support operations; advising on procedural processes; or other work that provided direct support and exposure to substantive agency programs, where one year of full-time experience is equal to 30 semester hours of education.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 12 months of full-time work as a Secretary 2, Clerk Specialist, Public Service Supervisor, Accounting Technician (any level), Purchasing Assistant, or Human Resources Technical Assistant
