Does leading the dedicated teams charged with designing transportation improvement projects throughout the state interstates interest you? We are excited to hire an Assistant Design Bureau Director – Development | Transportation Engineer Administrator who will lead the agency’s highway design teams as well as direct the design work provided by our professional engineering consultant partners.
Location: Ames, Iowa – Design Bureau
Shift Requirements: Days, Monday through Friday. Flexible work hours available.
As the Assistant Design Bureau Director, you will foster growth and support for its reporting team through the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission: Making Lives Better Through Transportation and demonstrate actions and behaviors guided by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s five CORE values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception .
As a people manager this position will be responsible for aligning efforts of commitment, transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior of its team. You will have the opportunity to work with a professional leadership team focused on providing outstanding engineering solutions to transportation challenges in service to the public. Leading approximately 40 dedicated individuals to ensure that they are highly trained, adaptive, efficient and timely in the delivery of excellent transportation services that support our agency goals.
You will work on exciting and complex state roadway design projects. Advising engineers and designers on solutions to non-standard and highly complex challenges. Advancing innovation in safety analysis, investment optimization, technology for the design and construction of projects.
Our most successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the highway development process necessary to take highway improvement projects from concept to construction. You also must have a comprehensive understanding of advanced transportation engineering which includes the design of roadway geometric, construction staging, traffic control, safety analysis and the appropriate use of design flexibility.
Special Requirements
Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of four years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibility. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain and active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board.

- Licensure as a professional engineer; and
- Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities; and
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Manager or Transportation Engineer Senior or three years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist.
