Location : District 2 Office, Mason City, Iowa, 428 43 rd St SW, Mason City, IA 50401
Shift Requirements : M-F, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Flexible schedule, Some travel and overnight stays required.
As an Engineering Technician Senior – Primary Design, you will perform technical design tasks related to the engineering design and development of highway improvement projects. This position works under the supervision of the Assistant District Engineer (classified as a Transportation Engineer Executive). Daily direction and assignments will be provided by a District Design Engineer (classified as a Transportation Engineer Specialist) who acts as a lead worker. The person performing these duties as Engineering Technician Senior is expected to work under general direction, to undertake complicated,
technical assignments and complete these assignments working independently or as part of a team. Many assignments will involve significant coordination of efforts and information with other District staff, staff in the DOT’s Central Offices, consulting engineers, and local government agencies.
This position works in the District 2 covering a 19-county area in Northeast and North Central Iowa.
Duties Will Include, But Are Not Limited To
Possess and maintain a valid Class C non-commercial driver’s license.

Duties Will Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Preparing final design plans for maintenance, road resurfacing projects or other miscellaneous projects using computer-aided drafting/design (CADD) software.
- Collecting field information such as existing pipe sizes/condition, pavement/ditch conditions or other roadway features for the purpose of plan development.
- Evaluating existing guardrail for upgrade or replacement, warrants for left and right turn lanes, and vertical and horizontal alignments for compliance to design standards.
- Assisting with the development of project concepts including gathering background information such as as-builts, traffic counts, and pavement history.
- Calculating quantities and preparing cost estimates during project development and for submittal to Contracts staff.
- Attending concept reviews and field exams as the District 2 representative.
Possess and maintain a valid Class C non-commercial driver’s license.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, highway design, materials inspection, or materials testing.
- A total of seven years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in civil engineering or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or Design Technician Specialist, or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician, Highway Technician Senior, Engineering Operations Technician, or Design Technician.
Additional Qualification Requirements
- Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.
- If a CDL is not required, designated positions in this class are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
- In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
- Prior to starting employment, persons in designated positions are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
- Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
