The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Information Technology Specialist 3 to support the Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB)!
This role will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of specialized databases, network systems, and hardware. This role will be crucial for maintaining network security, identifying potential threats, and providing essential support for the DOB library’s database and system integrations.

The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Information Technology Specialist 3 to support the Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB)!
This role will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of specialized databases, network systems, and hardware. This role will be crucial for maintaining network security, identifying potential threats, and providing essential support for the DOB library’s database and system integrations.
Key Responsibilities
- Computer Operations and Server Maintenance:
- Install and maintain software for the Department's networks, provide technical support, and ensure compatibility with nonvisual access technology.
- Monitor servers and backup systems, apply security patches, address outages, and notify relevant personnel of issues or actions taken.
- Provide technical assistance to staff, maintain hardware (servers, desktops, laptops, etc.), and ensure equipment is functioning properly.
- Maintain accurate inventory of all technology-related items and order replacement equipment as necessary.
- Network Security:
- Monitor and analyze security logs from email, intrusion detection, antivirus, and anti-spyware systems to detect and respond to external network threats.
- Identify infected computers and persistent external attackers, recommending actions and firewall modifications to protect the network.
- Department for the Blind Library Support:
- Perform maintenance and updates for the library's specialized databases, systems, and software, ensuring seamless integration with internal and external systems like Athena and NLS.
- Configure and manage the library's management system, including creating and analyzing custom database queries and reports for system maintenance, quality control, and statistical tracking.
- Assist in developing and maintaining integrations between library systems such as EOS, NoveList, and BARD, ensuring compliance with relevant guidelines and requirements.

- After a conditional offer of employment has been made, and as the final step in the hiring process, candidates for this position will be subject to a background investigation, which may include but may not be limited to a verification of a candidate’s education, previous employment/work history, contact of personal references, motor vehicle records, and a criminal history check (including through Federal, State, or Local criminal justice agencies).

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering websites.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in computer science, computer applications, software engineering, computer engineering, management information systems, business analytics, or cyber security.
- All of the following (a and b):
- One year of full-time work experience in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering websites; and
- A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
- All of the following (a and b):
- One year of full-time work experience in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.g., systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing); and
- Either of the following:
- Certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the computer specialty fields described in part a; or
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as an Information Technology Specialist 2.
