The State Historical Museum of Iowa is seeking a passionate and motivated Museum Education Assistant Intern to assist the museum’s education team with the development and execution of educational programming. This internship will offer an opportunity to work with both in-person and virtual public programs, while gaining hands-on experience in museum education.
Key Responsibilities
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the State Historical Museum of Iowa , located in the iconic State Historical Building of Iowa, just west of the State Capitol in Des Moines. Gain valuable experience helping develop, deliver, and evaluate educational programs and events that highlight Iowa’s rich heritage, from its early history to the present.
You’ll work on dynamic projects related to exhibitions, collections, and community outreach, with the chance to make a real impact in how the museum engages with its visitors.

- In-Person Programming: Assist with the delivery of seasonal educational programming for diverse audiences, ranging from children to adults.
- Program Development: Help create and develop engaging educational programs and events tailored to a variety of audiences.
- Collaboration: Work alongside the education team to support and enhance ongoing educational efforts and community outreach.
- Additional Duties: Take on other tasks as assigned to help improve and expand the museum’s educational offerings.
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in history, education, museum studies, or a related field of study.
- Interest in museum education and a passion for sharing knowledge about Iowa’s history.
- Ability to maintain a professional and mature attitude while working independently.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and safely use step ladders as part of programming setup.

- Strong interest or background in history, education, or museum studies is preferred.
