The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking dedicated individuals committed to protecting Iowa's natural resources and providing citizens with recreational opportunities. We currently have an opening for a Natural Resources Biologist (NRB) in Western Iowa. This position will be based in Winterset, Iowa.
What We're Looking For From You
Design, implement and monitor management activities for the Wildlife Bureau's wildlife damage program. Provide technical services to landowners and organizations in the prevention and control of wildlife damage. Complete management plans for all landowners and tenants that meet minimum damage qualifications. Issue deer depredation licenses and/or shooting permits to landowners to help address deer management problems where appropriate. Work with cities, state parks, etc., to set up special deer and/or goose hunts where appropriate. Work with cities and landowners to address goose management problems.
Coordinate wildlife damage work activities with field staff and supervisors on the Wildlife Bureau to insure the wildlife damage program is successful. Develop and coordinate new techniques to address wildlife damage problems.
Coordinate wildlife damage work activities with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, farm organizations such as the Iowa Farm Bureau, horticultural groups and tree growers associations.
Solicit input on wildlife damage programs from agricultural producer groups
Carry out numerous investigations concerned primarily with collection of biological data, population, and harvest statistics. Make recommendations in setting the hunting seasons. Conduct independent investigations as needed.
Carry out public relations activities to provide information and education to the public about the Fish and Wildlife Division including the Wildlife Damage Management Program and other assigned duties.
Prepare all routine, progress, and special project reports for the Western Iowa region of responsibility, including the Des Moines Metro Area. Perform all administrative duties as requested and comply with departmental policy.

Provides landowners information on state and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to wildlife resources.
Performs strenuous work and works under inclement conditions at times; demonstrates knowledge of wildlife management techniques; and displays a high standard of ethical conduct.

Additional salary increases may occur after the first six months, and then annually (if applicable). 6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, including at least twelve semester hours (or the academic equivalent) in fisheries biology, or nine semester hours in wildlife biology, and the equivalent of two years of full-time work experience in professional fisheries work or two years of full-time work experience in professional wildlife work;
OR
a master's degree in fisheries biology, wildlife biology, or fisheries management or wildlife management;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to thirty-six months of full-time work as a Natural Resources Technician 1 or 2 shall be qualified.

Additional Qualification Requirements
