The Assistant Director of Academic Success is responsible for the daily operations, strategic planning, and overall management of academic support services at LSU Shreveport. Reporting to the Director of Academic Success, this position oversees a variety of programs aimed at fostering student academic achievement, retention, and recovery. Key areas of focus include accreditation, peer tutoring, academic coaching, writing consultations, and the supervision of support staff. The Assistant Director is also responsible for ensuring services meet institutional goals and contribute to accreditation efforts, with a special emphasis on integrating technology, intervention programs, and faculty training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Support Services Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of key learning support services, including peer tutoring, guided study groups (SI), writing consultations, and academic coaching.
  • Hiring & Supervision: Lead the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate academic support staff, including peer tutors, SI leaders, writing consultants, and academic coaches. Manage staff scheduling, ensuring appropriate coverage for in-person and online services.
  • Accreditation & Program Evaluation: Ensure that all academic support services align with program accreditation requirements. Contribute to the accreditation review process by providing data, reports, and documentation related to the operations of the Student Success Center and its services.
  • Technology & Online Learning Management: Ensure academic support services are effectively integrated with LSU Shreveport’s Learning Management System, including the use of tools and resources that support digital learning. Develop and maintain on-demand and asynchronous academic support resources to ensure flexibility for all students. Oversee point-of-service technologies to enhance the delivery of academic services.
  • Academic Intervention & Recovery: Utilize LSUS platforms and systems to track student performance, engagement, and outcomes, proactively identifying at-risk students. Manage the SOAR Academic Recovery Program, working with students to develop academic recovery plans that support their return to good academic standing.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Serve as a primary point of contact for communication between academic success services and campus stakeholders, including faculty, advisors, and other student support services. Ensure students are aware of and actively using available academic resources by maintaining regular outreach and communication through various platforms.
  • Faculty Training & Support: Collaborate with faculty to identify high-risk courses and provide strategies for enhancing student learning and success. Develop and deliver training workshops for faculty on academic success tools, technologies, and student support practices.
  • Course Instruction: Teach a minimum of one (1) First-Year Seminar course annually, within the parameters determined by program leaders.
  • Assessment & Continuous Improvement: Participate in tracking and assessing the effectiveness of academic support services through data collection, reporting, and analysis. Contribute to the continuous improvement of programs by implementing feedback-driven changes and innovations.
  • Confidentiality & Compliance: Maintain confidentiality and comply with all FERPA guidelines.
  • University Service: Serve on various university committees, as needed; other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution. 
  • Minimum of two years of experience in academic advising, coaching, teaching, or other student support services.
  • Strong understanding of student academic challenges and barriers, particularly for students with risk factors.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement academic intervention programs and utilize data-driven tools.
  • Proficient in the use of technology for academic support, including learning management systems and digital learning platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively across departments and collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to ensure student success.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Dedication to providing a welcoming and supportive environment that benefits all students, regardless of background or circumstance.

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics

  • Advanced degree in education, psychology, student personnel services, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in LMS management, curriculum development, and academic intervention strategies.
  • Experience teaching at the secondary or college level.
  • Experience supervising and training student employees or professional staff.
  • Understanding of the principles of learning science, including the impact of non-cognitive factors such as motivation on student success.
  • Experience with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and Supplemental Instruction (SI) certification and accreditation requirements.
