No experience or training is required.
Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To train in manual deck and firefighting duties aboard a fireboat which involves daily maintenance duties aboard fireboats and manning fire hoses and fire monitors in fighting fires aboard vessels and onshore structures.
Level of Work:
Entry.
Supervision Received:
Close from a Firetug Mate/Firefighter.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Location of Work:
Port of New Orleans; Fire Boat Division.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Firetug Deckhand/Firefighter by presence of trainee level work.
Examples of Work
Trains in operation of fire monitors and handling of fire hoses for fighting fires aboard ships, other vessels and onshore installations.
Trains in maintenance of firefighting equipment.
Fastens hawsers and mooring lines to tows, wharfs, piers, or pilings.
Coils and splices rope.
Washes down vessel and scrapes and paints metal and woodwork.
Cleans deck machinery and equipment and polishes brass and glass.
Stands radio/telephone watch.
Assists with deck repairs.
Assists with mooring lines in recovering vessels adrift.
Assists passengers aboard vessel.
