The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is accepting applications for the position of Marine Technician I, II, or III (depending on experience) in support of oceanographic research and communications technology aboard the research vessel, R/V Point Sur.  R/V Point Sur is a medium-sized (136ft long) vessel, designated as a regional class vessel that operates primarily in the Gulf of Mexico but does occasionally operates in the Atlantic and Caribbean. 
 
The Marine Technician will report to the Technical Services Manager, and works closely with the captain, crew, and science party of the research vessel while onboard the ship. The Marine Technician is the primary liaison between the science parties that work on board R/V Pelican and the vessel’s crew to ensure successful completion of scientific missions. The candidate must have good interpersonal skills and be willing to work as a part of a team to meet the research and education mission of LUMCON. This position will be primarily based at R/V Point Sur’s home port in Gulfport, MS. The position will also require periodic travel to the  LUMCON Marine Center (www.lumcon.edu), located at 8124 Louisiana Highway 56, Chauvin, LA and is approximately 80 miles SW of New Orleans.  This position may also periodically require travel to and from other port depends on the vessel’s schedule and necessities of port calls. The position is full-time with State of Louisiana benefits.  Onboard time away from the dock accrues 1.5 times overtime as well as sea-pay.

Review of applicants will continue until the position is filled.An associate or bachelors degree in oceanography, marine science, engineering or related discipline and/or at least 1 year of experience as a sea going Marine Technician or similar position is required for Marine Tech I. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a position equivalent to Marine Tech I is required to qualify for Marine Tech II. At least 3 years’ experience as a Marine Tech II is required to qualify for Marine Tech III.

Must provide for their own reliable transportation to and from where R/V Pelican’s home port in Gulfport, Mississippi.


  • Familiarity with standard oceanographic instrumentation, associated data acquisition and software is preferred:
    • RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
    • Seabird Electronic CTDs and sensor arrays
    • Shipboard computer networks
    • NOAA’s Scientific Computer System (SCS)
    • Various over-the-side data acquisition packages
    • Winch monitoring systems
  • Marine Technician will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of permanent and transitory shared-use equipment and computer facilities
  • Act as a system administrator for the ship’s computers
  • Troubleshoot satellite based internet services
  • Provide technical assistance to scientists and other personnel
  • Operate a small Rigid-Hulled Inflatable (RIB) with outboard to complete scientists’ objectives.
  • Willing and have the ability to spend an average of 180 days per year at sea
  • Spend an average of 100 days of dockside maintenance work
  • Must maintain an active TWIC card
  • Must maintain a valid US Passport
  • Must be flexible as the vessel’s schedule can be very fluid and subject to change
  • Perform normal duties onboard an ocean-going ship including: 
    • Ascend and descend ladders
    • Lift equipment up to 50lbs
    • Work aloft and in confined spaces
    • Work odd and extended hours
