About this Position

The overall function of this position is to perform a broad range of construction and maintenance tasks using various pieces of specialized heavy and other numbered mobile equipment ( as indicated below ) needed to accomplish the work task of the Department. The position is located in the statewide Section 42, Unit 006 of DOTD and reports directly to a Maintenance Highway Foreman 2. The work is generally performed out-of-doors in various weather and terrain conditions according to the nature of the job assignment.

The incumbent is required to have experience and ability to operate large complicated pieces of equipment. Incumbent is required to possess a class A CDL w/tanker endorsement. This position is safety sensitive and requires random drug testing. Incumbent is required to travel statewide. Incumbent may be required to perform other duties as necessary including but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

CLASS A CDL REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT 

THE STARTING PAY FOR THIS POSITION IS $22.52 PER HOUR PLUS AN ADDITIONAL $2.00 PER HOUR FOR EACH HOUR WORKED

WEEKLY STATEWIDE TRAVEL AND 24 HOUR ON CALL STATUS REQUIRED

Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.Function of Work:
To operate heavy mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks.

Level of Work:
Advanced.

Supervision Received:
General from a Foreman, or other higher level maintenance supervisory or administrative personnel.

Supervision Exercised:
Functional over lower graded equipment operations or laboring personnel, as needed.

Location of Work:
Levee Districts; Ports; Terminal Districts; Department of Wildlife and Fisheries; Department of Natural Resources; Office of Forestry; Department of Health and Human Resources; or other agencies throughout the state requiring the regular operation of very heavy mobile equipment.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator 1 by the requirement for operation of large mobile cranes, draglines, pile drivers, or locomotives as the primary, regular and recurring function of the job.

Differs from Foreman and other supervisory jobs by the requirement that actual operation of heavy equipment, rather than full-time supervision, constitutes the major function of the job.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

85% Mobile Equipment Operation

Operates a variety of heavy specialized numerated equipment used by the department (as indicated below) to accomplish the transportation, maintenance and construction tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

Equipment used by incumbent includes, but is not limited to:

  • Energreen ILF 81500 (tree cutting, tree and branch removal)
  • Truck mounted sewerjet w/vacuum
  • Truck tractors with 55-ton triple-axle trailers used to transport equipment
  • Wrecker/tow trucks of various sizes (2 ton to 30 ton)
  • Long boom (50') and mini tracked excavators
  • Tracked excavator w/Brontosaurus brush cutter attachment
  • Tractor mounted back hoe
  • Dump trucks (single and tandem axle)
  • Various stump grinding equipment
  • Skid Steer/Compact Track Loader
  • Other equipment as needed
Prior to equipment operation the incumbent conducts routine visual/physical safety inspection of equipment; reports problems to supervisor/appropriate personnel and/or take necessary corrective action whenever possible. This includes performing routine maintenance and making minor repairs to equipment as needed to keep equipment in clean, good and safe working condition. Also prepares any necessary paper work for the equipment as directed.
 
Occasionally must make field repairs to equipment when necessary to finish a task or be able to move equipment to a new location or the shop for more repairs.

10% Miscellaneous Tasks Related to Mission

Performs other duties as directed by supervisors or higher-level personnel in order to accomplish the departments' transportation, maintenance and construction task required by the various districts on a statewide basis. Attends required training in accordance what the Department's Structured Training Program and manufacturer's' training requirements. Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, replacing brushes, changing/sharpening cutter teeth, etc.

Cleans and inspects assigned equipment daily.

Obtains/maintains CDL (required for this position); reports CDL revocations to appropriate personnel in accordance with the Department's Commercial Driver's (CDL) License Policy (DOTD Maintenance Manual). May train and/or assist in training lower level operators.

5% Other Duties
Performs other duties as directed by supervisors. May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
