Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine has a current vacancy for a Psychiatric Social Worker II. This positions open to current Maine DOC employees as well as outside applicants.

MDOC is destigmatizing corrections for the betterment of all Maine communities. Through the ‘Maine Model of Corrections’, we promote the safety of our staff and residents while reducing barriers to meaningful rehabilitative opportunities. We facilitate restorative justice practices that equip justice-involved youth and clients with the skills they need to become contributing members of society upon release, including treatment, education, and job training. The Division of Juvenile Services in Maine is dedicated to ensuring the successful transition of all Maine youth into adulthood. We are committed to providing a fair, equitable, and responsive juvenile justice system that delivers positive outcomes for justice-involved youth.

To support our mission, we are seeking dynamic professionals with a strong drive and ambition, along with a great attitude, well-developed integrity, and strong ethics as a Psychiatric Social Worker II. This position collaborates with other members of the treatment team, including family and guardians, the juvenile probation officer and other treatment providers critical to a successful return to the community. You will be involved in rehabilitation and adjustment of justice involved youth who may have, or have had, serious mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Work is conducted in an institutional setting, with frequent contact with families and community organizations in individual plan development.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

  • Knowledge of social aspects of mental disease and mental deficiency and of modern methods of treatment.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric social casework principles and techniques.
  • knowledge of emotional and behavioral disturbances
  • Knowledge of home finding and placement methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with patients and their families.
  • Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with residents, staff and families.
  • Ability to interview and counsel patients and families.
  • Ability to interpret casework program to and community and social agencies
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive social case records.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's Degree in Social Work including courses in psychiatric social work and one (1) year experience in psychiatric social work -OR- an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
