Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to conduct analysis and reporting of statewide HIV, STI and viral hepatitis surveillance data to inform prevention and care programs for the alleviation of adverse health effects. This position will be responsible for analyzing statewide data to describe HIV, STI and viral hepatitis syndemic trends across the state of Maryland, generating reports and statistics, evaluating changes in prevention and health services outcomes, and proposing practices or policies based on findings that promote public health. This position recommends programmatic changes to enhance the effectiveness of various HIV, STI and viral hepatitis programs across the state based on analyses of surveillance and client level data. This position will use HIV, STI and viral hepatitis data to identify people who require intervention/services and provide linkage and medical services in conjunction with local health departments under the direction of the state epidemiologist (physician). This position will support statewide infectious disease outbreak investigation and response activities, as well as work across units in the bureaus to achieve goals. This position will participate in the MDH Epidemiologist On-Call System and other outbreak response activities, under the direction of the State Epidemiologist which includes attendance at weekly outbreak meetings, biweekly infectious disease updates, monthly epidemiologist-on-call reviews and quarterly epidemiologist-on-call trainings, as well as periodic service as the 24 hour a day, 7 days a week MDH on-call epidemiologist. This position requires general supervision and will provide leadership and guidance to junior-level epidemiologists.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:�� A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics. Experience: Two years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance as an Epidemiologist after receipt of the Master’s degree. Note:�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service�experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or�Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The desired candidate should possess the following: 1. Experience analyzing and interpreting epidemiological data using SAS. 2. Experience in data management, data analysis, report writing and presenting data.
