The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks experienced, zealous, dedicated, and demonstrated leaders to serve as District Court Supervising Attorneys for District XI in our Frederick and Washington County offices.��OPD is committed to building a culturally diverse staff and strongly encourages people historically underrepresented in the practice of law to apply. The Frederick and Washington County offices are busy rural public defender offices with a combined total of approximately 30 employees providing client-centered representation to juveniles and adults charged with misdemeanors and felonies. POSITION DUTIES

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION � The District Court Supervising Attorney combines their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with strong leadership and litigation skills to ensure the highest standard of client representation in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. The Supervising Attorney is involved in the day-to-day operations and supervision of attorneys, maintains an active caseload, interfaces with the Judiciary,�and helps promote community engagement in the county. This position will be primarily located in Hagerstown, Maryland supervising attorneys handling District Court matters; however, members of the supervision team will provide coverage to the other counties within the district. � PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES � ● Reports to the District Public Defender. ● Works closely with the District XI Leadership team to maintain a high standard of representation through ensuring accountability while fostering mentorship, teamwork, and communication. ● Supervises attorneys handling misdemeanor and felony cases. ● Monitors the attorney caseloads to ensure optimal client outcomes and attorney development. ● Actively consults with attorneys on case preparation and trial strategy. ● Identifies, assesses, and cultivates talent amongst attorneys. ● Organizes and conducts regular in-house training programs. ● Ensures accountability through the regular evaluation of attorney performance. ● Fosters a culture of excellence, resourcefulness, and zealousness amongst attorneys and staff. ● Works closely with the Training Division and other Statewide Divisions to ensure effective representation through the development of relevant policies, practices, and trainings. ● Maintains an active caseload. ● Performs other duties as determined by the District Public Defender and the Public Defender.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS �� �A minimum of 3 years felony�experience preferred. �� �Substantial criminal litigation experience and strong trial skill. �� Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, communication, supervisory, and management�experience. �� Demonstrated commitment to serving communities who have been pushed to the margins.� �� Clear dedication to upending systemic racism, prejudice, and unfairness in the criminal��justice system. �� Compassion. �� Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people with�different lived experiences. �� Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, diverse, team-oriented environment. �� Exceptional organizational, legal, and administrative skills necessary to handle a high�caseload. Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state.

SALARY� � Salary is dependent on experience and salary rules will apply to State of Maryland employees. Please visit the State of�Maryland Employee’s page to review benefit information. APD Supervisor:�starting at Grade 23: Step 13:�$120,399 � BENEFITS The Maryland Office of the Public Defender offers a generous benefits package that includes excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance. Benefits also include retirement savings, life insurance, and the option to participate in supplemental retirement options. MOPD Employees receive 6 days of personal leave, 15 days of sick leave, and at least 10 days of annual leave each calendar year in addition to paid holidays, and parental leave.
