This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Main Purpose of Job
The position oversees the operation and administration of the Maryland Park Service volunteer program. It also supports park operations by working park ranger operational shifts as necessary during the peak visitor season. The position requires a working knowledge of, and experience in, volunteer management, state park operations, and an ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in support of the Maryland Park Service mission.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for an Administrative Officer III position that serves as the statewide Volunteer Coordinator. The position oversees the operation and administration of the Maryland Park Service volunteer program. The position requires a working knowledge of, and experience in, volunteer management, state park operations, and an ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in support of the Maryland Park Service mission.
Duties include managing the Maryland Park Service volunteer website and database, assisting park specific volunteer coordinators with troubleshooting issues, posting volunteer opportunities and managing volunteer accounts through the volunteer software. Assembles annual volunteer totals at year end. Develops an annual volunteer report for Maryland Park Service Leadership. Coordinates volunteer opportunities and projects around the state. Assists park volunteer coordinators with advertising volunteer events through social media, press releases and other advertising platforms. Implements training opportunities to ensure volunteers have the required skills and knowledge to be successful. Establishes and facilitates training opportunities to further develop and support park volunteer coordinators. This position may assist with working at park sponsored programs and other special events.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of professional experience in training and leading a team in the performance of their duties
- Experience in leading and organizing volunteers
- Excellent communications skills (verbal and written)
- Excellent organizational skills
- Extensive experience utilizing database management
- Experience in developing and presenting natural resource and/or cultural and historic programs
- Experience working with community and government agency partners to provide public safety, resource protection and coordination
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
