Introduction
The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF) was created by the State Legislature in 1999 as an executive agency with the mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families and dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service.
Under the Department of Veterans and Military Families are five major programs:

POSITION DUTIES
Cleans, maintains and services State buildings;
Collects, recycles and disposes of trash and other items from State buildings;
Cleans floors, halls and stairways; Waxes and buffs floors and stairways;
Shampoos and vacuums rugs, carpets and upholstered furniture;
Cleans and disinfects restrooms and replaces supplies;
Dusts, cleans and makes minor repairs to furniture;
Loads and unloads supplies and equipment from trucks, moves office furniture and equipment and sets up chairs and tables for meetings and special events;
Performs routine building maintenance such as making minor roof repairs, preparing surfaces for painting, installing and replacing light bulbs, cleaning and unclogging drains, traps and lines, and replacing washers;
Inspects and replaces filters, belts and switches on equipment, cleans and lubricates machinery and tools, changes motor fluids and sharpens blades;
Cleans windows and walls;
Prepares routine inventory and supply reports and maintains work records;
Delivers mail and performs errands;
May make beds and clean and disinfect hospital wards and areas designated for patient use;
May perform outdoor maintenance and grounds care;
Performs other related duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: None.
Experience: None.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in grounds and/or building maintenance.
- Experience with small power tool use, lawn mowers and trimmers.
- Ability to clean and move heavy objects when necessary.
- Able to communicate effectively with thepublic.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
