The Maryland Freestate ChalleNGe Academy (FCA) is one of the original 10 state Challenge Programs. FCA is a tuition-free program which offers at-risk adolescents, 16 to 18 years old, an opportunity to change their future for the better by providing the skills, education and self-discipline needed to become responsible, productive citizens. The initial program consists of a 22-week residential phase. During this phase the cadets learn self-discipline, leadership, and responsibility.Participants live and work in a controlled military environment, encouraging teamwork and personal growth. A 12-month post-residential phase focuses on helping enroll graduates into continued education, technical school programs or entry-level employment. During the post-residential phase,students are assisted by at least one trained mentor from the community for further development. This position is full-time, Monday through Friday. The incumbent will be required to work weekends and evenings as needed, and will be considered an Essential Employee.

Main Purpose of Job
The Computer Information Specialist position is responsible for interface with MD Military department for local system administration and maintenance communication, as well as administration of the Database. The selected incumbent will be responsible for teaching a portion of the computer class and assisting in the inventory of all computer related items.
POSITION DUTIES
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Control passwords and network access.
- Assist with teaching Cadets in the computer lab.
- Proctor GED Exam.
- Control computer equipment inventory.
- Handle telephone request, services, and bills.
- Access and maintain FCA Database.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: One year of experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications.

Candidates may substitute additional experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute nine credit hours in personal computer applications at an accredited college, university or institution for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the completion of a certification program in computer repair, such as Microsoft A or an equivalent program for the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Cyber and Information Systems classifications or Cyber and Information Systems specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One year of experience teaching computer lab in an educational setting.
- One year of experience granting password access and user privileges.
- One year of experience working with at risk youth.
- One year of experience troubleshooting network issues when they arise.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motorvehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’slicense valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Selected candidate will be subject to a criminal background check as required by the Family LawArticle,Section 5-561, Annotated Code of Maryland. The candidate will also be subject to a Childcare and Federal background check in order to access the military installation.
2. Employees in this classification are required to successfully complete training as indicated by the National Challenge Program, such as a one-week basic course for all Challenge Program staff and advanced courses on specific job responsibilities.
3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
4. This position also requires a valid Maryland Motor Vehicle operators license class C with less than 5 points in order to operate state vehicles.
5. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
6. Employees in this classification will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential childcare licensure by the Department of Human Resources.
7. Employees promoted within the classification series may be required to operate large vans and buses to transport youth offsite. Employees assigned these duties will be required to obtain a Class C Maryland driver’s license.
