Performance Based Opportunity

As part of our continuous efforts to optimize performance and drive success, the Accountant Trainee is eligible for an annual promotion. The incumbent may advance to a higher grade within the classification series, based on satisfactory work performance.

Progressive grade levels include:


Health Physicist I – Grade 15 ($57,275 - $92,108)

Health Physicist II – Grade 16 ($60,987 - $98,313)

Main Purpose of Job

The Health Physicist Trainee will assist in recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public. The incumbent in this position will learn to provide scientific and technical reviews of detailed applications for new radioactive material licenses, radioactive material license renewals, amendments and terminations. The incumbent will also learn to conduct on-site inspections of new facilities in order to qualify them as physically adequate and with personnel competent to receive and use radioactive materials. The Health Physicist Trainee will assist in highly technical reviews of radioactive sealed sources and devices containing radioactive material requested to be certified to be safe for manufacture and distribution in and from the State of Maryland.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Sciences, and or Physics;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office-Word, Access, Excel;
  • Strong organizational skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).

ANNUAL LEAVE - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year.

SICK LEAVE – fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year.

PARENTAL LEAVE – up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

HOLIDAYS – State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year.
