Introduction

Maryland Public Television, commonly known as MPT, is a public television network that broadcasts throughout the entire state of Maryland and the District of Columbia and into parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is Maryland's only statewide broadcaster. Headquartered in Owings Mills, MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and is a producer of both locally and nationally distributed TV programs and digital content.

Main Purpose of Job

The Videographer is the primary source for capturing video images and sounds that producers use to create programs. Contemporary production practices dictate that producers move beyond the confines of the studio and go to the story directly. The incumbent’s ability to record high quality material on location makes the videographer a prime asset to the production process.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Operates portable equipment, such as video cameras, microphones, and audio mixers.
  • Works with minimum supervision while maintaining high standards of video production.
  • Directs on-camera talent to ensure quality performance.
  • Addresses specific needs of clients (i.e., producer, reporter, and director).
  • Manages projects while adhering to time and budget constraints.
  • Schedules necessary equipment for a production.
  • Applies the essentials of video editing to guide the proper selection of shots.
  • Assembles and disassembles sets, moves and hangs fixtures from a studio grid, assists the lighting director, and sets up and / or strikes equipment after a production.
  • Performs in the role of floor director, camera operator, production assistant, robotic camera operator, or teleprompter operator.
  • Works under the direct supervision of a studio supervisor and the direction of a television director.
  • Maintains flexibility and initiative in achieving high standards during location shooting.
  • Drives state vehicles responsibly and maintains log sheets for regular maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education : Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience : Five (5) years of experience in the field of television or film as part of a production team using portable equipment, such as video cameras and accessories, microphones, and audio mixers. Note : Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualifications :

  • Proficiency operating a drone for videography.
  • Experience shooting broadcast news and / or feature packages with the ability to frame scenes and follow the action on location.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of video production.
  • Ability to use and maintain a variety of video and audio equipment.
  • Experience in framing shots and performing various camera techniques.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants are required to provide a copy of a demo reel or link for a demo reel if selected for an interview. This position may require a flexible work schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position may require working outside in unfavorable or harsh weather conditions. The selected candidate will be required to lift equipment in excess of 50 pounds and may need to climb ladders and use motorized lifts to operate and install in-studio lights.
