Main Purpose of Job
The position contributes to a diverse outdoor recreation opportunity for Maryland citizens and visitors through the anadromous restoration project by aiding in the culture, marking, stocking, and assessment of threatened, endangered and extirpated fish species.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services, Hatcheries-Anadromous Species is currently accepting applications for a permanent Natural Resources Biologist II position. This position participates in restoration projects for American shad, hickory shad and Atlantic sturgeon. Primary duties include but are not limited to field surveys to assess hatchery stocking, contribute authorship to annual federal aid progress reporting, lab work to analyze scales for age determination and otolith analyses to determine adult hatchery contribution and juvenile population estimates. Position has administrative duties that include monthly reports, procurement of supplies and equipment and is designated as the facility safety officer. Position is also responsible for vehicle and watercraft maintenance, repairs, and annual inspections to ensure all are safe for duty.
Incumbent will be required to maintain or attend training to obtain a Maryland Class A Commercial Driver’s License. A Class A: Applies to “combination” vehicles “tractor- trailer” with a Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR) more than 26,000 pounds, and the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience conducting field surveys and is familiar with hatchery culture operations.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office for spreadsheets, databases and report writing.
- Experience with trailering and the operation of MD class A and/or B heavy vehicles.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employee assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
In addition to a Maryland Driver’s License, at the State’s expense, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License and associated physical examination certificate. Program Leader will assist with required paperwork and instruction.
