Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for conducting basic Wildlife Response activities in the assigned counties. In that role, this position administers deer management permits, responds to sick / injured / diseased wildlife occurrences, and performs outreach activities. This position assists with wildlife survey, research, and monitoring projects, some of which involve the capture, marking, and release of wild animals.

This position also performs land management duties with the staff assigned to LeCompte WMA, assisting with habitat management projects, maintenance / repair of facilities / equipment / public / private lands in the Region for the purpose of wildlife conservation and public recreation.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking interested candidates for a Wildlife Response Technician position to administer Deer Management Permit program, provide technical assistance to the public and resolve nuisance / injured/ sick wildlife issues when warranted by laws, regulations, or policies, assist with outreach and education programs, and act as the agency representative through regular public interactions in a variety of situations. Responsibilities will also include assisting with wildlife surveys, data collection, timely completion of administrative paperwork, and a variety of land, habitat, and facilities management activities on a network of wildlife management and managed hunting areas in the region.

Work activities may involve use of firearms, immobilization equipment, animal restraint devices, pesticide application equipment, participation in prescribed burning projects, heavy lifting, use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, atv / utv’s, agricultural/heavy equipment, and boats. The incumbent will be subject to periodic adverse working conditions (hot / cold temperatures, rain / snow / ice, insects, mud, smoke, direct contact with wildlife, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Four years of experience, two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes

  • Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience working with and responding to citizens with nuisance wildlife issues, landowners experiencing damage to commercial crops, the issuance of specialized permits, and/or similar customer service responsibilities.
  • At least one year of experience with animal capture techniques and the collection of biological data used to manage / monitor native wildlife populations.
  • At least six-months experience implementing wildlife habitat management practices that demonstrate familiarity with the use of chain saws, chemical applications, and the use of prescribed fire (including accredited Wildland fire training).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
