LOCATION OF POSITION : MDH, Laboratory Services, Baltimore, MD
POSITION DUTIES :
This position will act as a research and development scientist by conducting applied research to develop new microbiology laboratory testing procedures for infectious disease agents related to newly emerging / reemerging infections and anti-microbial resistance at the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from infectious / communicable diseases. Additional validations and verifications will be assigned on an as-needed basis and may involve working in both a Biosafety 2 and Biosafety 3 environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education : A Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.
Experience : One year of experience performing public health applied research and development in a university, private or public health laboratory system.
Notes :
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in any of the disciplines noted above for the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS :
The desired candidate must possess 2 years experience developing and maximizing the performance of real-time PCR diagnostic assays for the detection of human pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes.
