Agency Overview : The Massachusetts House of Representatives (“House”) is comprised of 160 independently elected Members, each representing a district of approximately 43,000 people. The House meets year-round in either formal or informal sessions. The House is led by the Speaker of the House, who is elected by the Members. Position Overview : An Administrative Aide assists the Committee Chair (Chair) or Member of the House of Representatives in the discharge of the Chair / Member’s official duties by providing communication, legislative, and administrative support services deemed necessary by the Chair / Member. The Administrative Aide assists with corresponding with constituents, advocates, and other legislative offices on matters of interest to the Chair or Member and performs a wide variety of administrative support services, which may include constituent services, legislative services and other duties deemed necessary to support the Committee or Member. An Administrative Aide may provide senior-level support or direction to other staff, as assigned.   • Provides administrative support for the Committee or Member, including, but not limited to, answering phones and taking messages, greeting visitors, scheduling, and other tasks as may be assigned;
  • Attends briefings, hearings, and other events as needed to represent the Member or Committee;
  • Manage constituent inquiries and casework for the Member, delegating to and coordinating with Legislative Aide(s) or other staff; may oversee and update the constituent services database for the Member;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Chair or Member’s constituents; under the general direction of the Member, exercises independent judgment to respond to constituents and follow up to resolve concerns;
  • Draft proposed legislation and amendments on matters of importance to the Chair or Member;
  • Monitor and track legislation for the Chair or Member;
  • Organize committee hearings, including preparing hearing notices and briefing materials on various topics for the Committee or Member;
  • Serve as liaison with federal, local, and other state government officials and other stakeholder and constituency groups, as directed by the Chair or Member;
  • Respond to inquiries from legislators, staff, agency representatives, and constituency groups regarding bill language and bill status for bills of importance to the Chair or Member;
  • Assist the Chair or Member with work on special commissions and task forces in designated topic areas, and attend meetings as directed;
  • Supervise interns and coordinate with the House intern program; may provide supervision and senior-level support to Legislative Aide;
  • Utilize LAWS, Microsoft 365, and NCSL and other research databases; and
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced professional office environment; handle or operate standard office equipment, and occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. . Required Skills / Attributes :
  • Ability to interface and work with diverse communities and personalities in a professional and helpful manner;
  • Ability to multi-task effectively, work independently and meet deadlines on short notice;
  • Excellent research, analytical and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills including, but not limited to, calendar and email management and ability to prioritize tasks as needed;
  • Ability to follow-up and complete tasks. Preferred Education and Work Experience :
  • Bachelor’s degree; or
  • Associate degree with more than 1 year of professional work experience; or
  • High School diploma with more than 2 years of professional work experience.
  • Prior work experience in the legislature, government or public administration preferred.
  • Prior experience utilizing LAWS is a plus Position Type / Expected Hours of Work : This is a full-time, minimum of 37.5 hour per week position. Days of work are typically Monday through Friday. Hours vary and may include evening and weekend work to support the Member’s legislative or constituent activities.
