Job Description
Serve as a crew member on Great Lakes Research vessels. Assist in operation of the vessel during fisheries surveys, and under guidance of research biologists, assume responsibility for sample collection and processing related to these surveys. Assist in vessel maintenance. Record data in the field and complete computer data entry duties for all vessel-related samples. Process age and diet samples in the laboratory, complete data entry, and conduct data quality control, analysis, and summarization activities related to fisheries assessments. Assist in other non-vessel-related projects and sampling activities, including stream shocking, small boat trawling, seining, trap netting, gill netting, boom shocking, fish tagging operations, and fish stocking as assigned.
Position Description
Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire a class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and without air brake restriction . Acquiring and maintaining a valid CDL is a condition of employment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must obtain a commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license within 12 months of hire. Acquiring and maintaining valid Pesticide Applicator’s license certification is a condition of employment.
Required Education And Experience
Education
Possession of an associate's degree in science with course work emphasis in limnology, icthyology, aquatic systems, or field biology.
Experience
Fisheries Technician 8
No specific type or amount is required.
Fisheries Technician 9
One year of experience performing technical fisheries management activities equivalent to a Fisheries Technician.
Fisheries Technician E10
Two years of experience performing technical fisheries management activities equivalent to a Fisheries Technician, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Technician 9.
Alternate Education And Experience
Fisheries Technician E10
Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher with 16 semester (24 term) credits in job specific or related course work may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.
