Advanced sites and associated investigations include the following factors/variables: multiple contaminants/types of contaminants; depth that the contaminants have traveled; complex underlying geology or hydrogeology with unique physical characteristics such as multiple aquifer systems, significant stratification, artesian conditions, surface water and groundwater interaction and fractured bed rock; multimedia (groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil and vapor with associated pathways and protocols with DOD USEPA and liable parties); advanced investigation methods which include: use of fate and transport characterization and modeling for contaminant movement, geophysical techniques and soil and vapor contaminant distribution; the development and review of complicated sampling plans; review and evaluation of new & existing equipment/technologies/sampling methodologies and leading edge techniques in complex stratigraphy such as unconsolidated glacial-fluvial and bedrock systems.
