Maintenance Mechanic

Maintain and repair all mechanical equipment at the Central Michigan Correctional Facility. Make minor electrical extensions and repairs.  Maintain and repair Food Service equipment, air conditioning units, and other heating and ventilation systems.  Supervise prisoner work crews.  Work on grounds as needed, using heavy equipment, front end loader, plow and backhoe.  Employee will exercise considerable independent judgment in making decisions without the availability of supervision.  This position may provide backup services for the St. Louis Correctional Facility.Education 
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Maintenance Mechanic 7

No specific type or amount is required.

Maintenance Mechanic 8

Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades. 

Maintenance Mechanic E9 

Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8.

Maintenance Mechanic 10 

Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9.Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.  All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

 This is a drug and alcohol test-designated position.
