Respiratory Therapy Technician

The employee works in a learning capacity performing a range of respiratory therapy technician assignments under close supervision, which include but are not limited to, conducting aerosol and intermittent positive pressure breathing treatments using nebulizers, respirators, and dilator medications; Setting up EKG machine, position leads onto patients, and run EKG's;  Performing pulmonary function tests using a Spirometer, calculating lung volume and vital capacities; Setting up and adjusting portable volume ventilators and chest shell ventilators; Nebulizes, suctions, and collects sputum using nasotracheal suction catheter and sends specimens to the lab for analysis; Listens to lung sound using stethoscope to evaluate locations of respiratory problems, observes patient signs and symptoms; Percusses patient's chest and back using air trapping techniques, and positions patient for drainage; Sets up, operates, and adjusts oxygen therapy equipment and humidifiers; checks piped-in and emergency oxygen supplies, changes tanks, and orders oxygen; Educating patients concerning respiratory problems and consults with nursing staff; Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.  This position is located behind the secured perimeter of a maximum security facility and is subject to drug and alcohol testing.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.  All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
