Job Summary

This position provides para-professional accounting work through the application of independent decision making and professional judgment in all assigned areas. The position is primarily responsible for providing technical fiscal and payroll advice and service relating to the Payroll function of the Financial Management Division. The person in this position handles complex transactions which require a complete understanding of the payroll and accounting systems to effectively control, analyze, audit, and prepare appropriate payroll records and reports, and recognize and mitigate errors or problems.

The demands of the position require a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. The person in this position must work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues, agency personnel, and vendors to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing and to resolve discrepancies as they arise.

This position is telework eligible. Staff are provided with the tools and equipment to be successful in a virtual work environment. Please note, the telework policy could change with notice based on business needs.

This position will be based out of the St. Paul office.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience with payroll processes in mid- to large-sized organizations.

OR

Associate's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or other closely related field as determined by the agency

Applicants that meet the above minimum qualification will be further evaluated on the following:

Skill in:

• Customer service to provide prompt, courteous, and accurate information to internal and external customers
• Using spreadsheet software applications, such as Microsoft Excel, to enter, compile, store, and retrieve data in a variety of reports
• Attention to detail to maintain accuracy and thoroughness when executing tasks

Knowledge of:

• Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to analyze and interpret financial records, locate basic errors, and recommend solutions to minor fiscal issues
• English to follow detailed instructions and explain complex processes to customers

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in:

• Knowledge and experience using Minnesota’s Statewide Integrated Financial Tools (SWIFT) and ERP systems.
• Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel, including creating spreadsheets, applying formulas, VLOOKUP, and pivot tables.
• Experience with SEMA4 (Statewide Employee Management).
• Experience processing invoices, accounts receivable, and performing account reconciliations.
• Problem-solving skills to recognize issues, analyze causes, and recommend and implement practical and legally compliant solutions.
• Skill in organization to manage workload, balance competing priorities, and meet strict deadlines.
