The MNIT DOC team runs many unique applications that manage the information and security of the department, supporting 4,500 employees across 10 prisons and 50 field offices located throughout the state.
Job Summary
As a Business Intelligence Lead, you will play a pivotal role in establishing the strategic foundations for analytics and reporting to address complex business problems. This position allows you to leverage your technical skills while contributing to the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) vision for managing data as an asset. You will work alongside data engineers, architects, and others drive data-driven decision-making and enhance the DOC's ability to utilize data effectively.
This position is temporary and includes full state fringe benefits; it is anticipated to last for up to three (3) years.
- Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
- Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of five (5) years of technical experience in business intelligence or data analytics, along with effective communication, presentation, active listening and interpersonal skills to lead others in the establishment of business intelligence and analytics.
Experience must include:
- Experience leading and guiding other staff with Azure tech stack like Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Fabric, Power BI.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R for data analysis and automation.
- Proficiency in SQL and experience with data modeling and database design.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
- Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A master's degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor's degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate's degree substitutes for one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Azure tech stack like Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Fabric, Power BI.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R data analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and their application in BI.
- Strong project management skills, including experience with Agile methodologies.
- Experience working with data governance frameworks and establishing data quality standards in a government environment.
