Job Description
Join our dynamic public health team as an Epidemiologist II, where you will work with a talented team to lead public health surveillance activities for environmental and occupational health. In this role, you'll use your expertise to monitor disease trends, identify health issues, and develop data-driven initiatives to improve the health of Nebraskans.
This position is responsible for planning, designing, and conducting health surveillance, including activities such as data collection, data analysis, and performing epidemiologic investigations. This role will also provide the opportunity to collaborate with partners at the local, state, and national level to work on joint projects, share best practices, and inform actions aimed at disease prevention.

Key Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Statistics, Epidemiology, Informatics, or Health field plus 6 years of experience working in data analysis, statistics, & interpretation of data in a health subject area OR Master's Degree in Public Health, Statistics, Epidemiology, Informatics, or Health field plus 4 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of: Epidemiological principles and practices related to the surveillance, investigative techniques, proper prevention and control techniques for diseases, infections and non-communicable conditions; Data to be collected and analyzed, statistical tools, complex epidemiological study methodologies and protocols; Nebraska and federal regulations, policies, and statutes involving reportable diseases, infections and noncommunicable conditions; multiple statewide surveillance system structures and operations; merging data, matching records across datasets, and other intermediate data management methods.
Skills in: Proficient to expert skills in SAS, R, or similar statistical analysis software; Intermediate skills in SQL, Tableau, ArcGIS or similar data management and data visualization tools; identifying appropriate statistical or epidemiologic analysis depending on data collection, data elements, and outcomes to be measured; convey complex models, methods, results, and interpretations to a wide variety of people (technical and non-technical); using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches; troubleshooting; developing publications for scientific and non-scientific audiences; identifying gaps in data, data collection, and systems; reading comprehension; grant writing; active listening.
Ability to: Independently design, develop, implement, integrate, and conduct epidemiological systems, models, and studies; provide guidance and technical assistance to others; conduct increasing complex analytical reviews of data including collection methods and provide appropriate interpretations; facilitate discussions with health professionals and professional committees; influence participation of health professionals and other partners; analyze complex health data, prepare studies and reports including responding to data and research requests; explain and defend complex studies and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and implement public health surveillance systems. Lead surveillance activities including data collection, analysis, database management, and epidemiologic investigations.
- Use multiple datasets to analyze data, provide interpretation and findings, and determine incidence, prevalence, trends, causes, and burden of health outcomes and conditions.
- Perform data and statistical analysis using programming statistical software such as SAS, R, and/or other software as needed.
- Develop, recommend, and implement intervention measures to control or prevent diseases and conditions based off the analysis of the available data, literature review findings, and other health and scientific information.
- Lead the preparation of written reports, manuscripts, data visualizations, data summaries, and guidance documents.
- Assist in planning and development of grant activities, writing and application of grant proposals, reporting to grants and other funding proposals.
- Provide education and trainings to other public health professionals and community coalitions.
- Perform outbreak or disease outcomes response, including case investigations, contact tracing, working with external individuals, reviewing datasets.
- Participate in health informatics and electronic data initiatives.
