Correctional Assistants work under the immediate supervision and direction of a P.O.S.T certified Category 3 custody officer. Correctional Assistants perform a variety of entry level assignments which do not require P.O.S.T. certification. These assignments could also include assisting in non- custodial areas of the institution, including Maintenance, Culinary or Warehouse. All posts will involve working around inmates. Positions allocated to the class are trained and oriented to the field of Corrections with the hopeful progression to correctional officer positions in the future. Correctional assistants do not respond to emergency situations, riots, and/or altercations involving inmates, do not supervise inmates, and do not perform security functions such as inmate movement or escort. Correctional Assistants work to ensure the health and safety of staff and inmates; assist custody staff in duties required in inmate housing areas; feed inmates in a timely manner; maintain sanitary and orderly living conditions; supervise and deliver inmate mail and correspondence; conduct formal and informal inmate population counts; and assist in the unit officers and Case Work staff as needed. Correctional Assistants primarily are posted to 8 hours 5 days a week with varying days off. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Qualifications
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) High school graduation or equivalent and one year of work experience. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Selected applicants must pass a psychological test prior to appointment A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
