Under close supervision, incumbents receive training in performing the duties described in the series concept and may progress to the next level in the series upon meeting minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. This is the trainee level in the series. Dispatchers must have the ability to handle more than one task at a time and operate efficiently in critical and stressful situations. They must stay calm and be able to communicate with callers, enforcement units and other emergency mobile units in a team atmosphere in both emergency and non-emergency situations. They want to make a difference by helping in time of emergency. There is never a dull moment in the dispatch center. It can be tough sometimes; dispatchers help citizens through a lot of difficulty and life-threatening situations, as well as taking the proper steps to ensure the responders are safe. The dispatch center runs 24/7, meaning dispatchers work various shifts (dayshift, swing shift, graveyard), including weekends and holidays. However, the benefits of the job can outweigh some of the difficulties. The State of Nevada provides excellent benefits, including medical insurance, paid sick leave and vacation, paid holidays, and deferred compensation. Starting September 30, 2023, eligible employees will receive a quarterly retention incentive of $250 through March 31, 2025. This is the entry level in the series and provides for semi-automatic progression to a Public Safety Dispatcher II and III upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. Eligible candidates will receive a seminar email invitation that will explain all the exams during the interview stages. The State of Nevada is committed to Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action in recruitment of its employees and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion or belief, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, domestic partnership, genetic information (GINA), or compensation and/or wages
